During my internship, I had the opportunity to start a project from scratch and take it through its entire lifecycle. It was a unique experience that I hadn't had in any other position before. Working with real clients and attending client meetings was invaluable to my growth.
The project had three main objectives: a porous plan/elevation, a strong connection between the interior and the landscape, and key areas for entertaining and hosting. To meet these objectives, we split the project across the site and divided it into four building units: master suite, living, guest suites, and recreation.
One of the key design aspects of the project was the use of thick limestone walls, which were used to divide the different spaces and create the sense of crossing heavy thresholds as you move through them. Additionally, the project was heavily glazed to bridge the gap between the interior and the landscape and create a feeling of a porous plan. Finally, a part of the project sat between a water feature and a pool to give the impression of the building sitting on water. The front water feature created a peaceful and serene drive up to the property, while the back pool offered a place for socializing and admiring the view of the lake and sunset.
In conclusion, this project gave me a broad understanding of how SHM works. With the guidance of my advisor, I was able to learn new software and receive input from a "client." The company overlooked my work throughout this project, making it a tall task, but SHM made it easier and more engaging.
